Andrea’s recent
post about the survival of illustration in a photography-heavy world got me thinking this week. Maybe illustrations are making a comeback, or did they even ever start to die? It seems a lot of commercial products have been using illustrations lately. For example, both Nike and Apple have had ad campaigns with illustration as a main component of the design. The Nike ad below is from a few years ago and the one below it is from an Apple iPod tv ad of recent years.

Publication Design featured an accomplished illustrator,
Nick Dewar. Check out his
portfolio to see some of his amazing work. Also interesting is the
But How section of his website in which he describes his creative process. A sample of his illustrations is below.

Here’s the website of another amazing illustrator/designer. Her cutout collage pieces are detailed, beautiful and unique. Two examples of her work are below.

I really enjoyed Nick and Mayuko's work, it's interesting to see their creative process and the different ways they take simple concepts to new levels of illustration.
I don't know if illustrations in ads and publications ever died out but I have noticed as of late that they are definitely prominent. I think that more people are noticing that those work better than photos in many cases. Because there is no real art direction needed. The look of the illustration is totally guided by the designer's imagination.
The illustrations you chose are great examples of ads done well. We've all seen those ads and liked them, so the illustrators must be doing something right.
